Thayer’s Greek Lexicon

April 16, 2024

Thayer’s Greek Lexicon A classic Greek lexicon useful for every theology student. Note that Thayer was a universalist, so be careful with any word dealing with salvation, and also the Trinity (his definition of “Christ” would seem to doubt Jesus’ deity). Basically the majority of his word definitions are from standard usage in the Greek NT and classical literature, so in theologically charged words, be careful.

Topic: Thayer’s Greek Lexicon
By Joseph Henry Thayer

I have to be very careful here about this dictionary. If you seriously study Greek, then there are classical lexicons that you just have to consult, and this is one of them. It is perhaps one of the top 10 Greek lexicons out there. Thayer’s specialty is looking at the biblical Greek and comparing meanings and specifics of a biblical word usage with that of its use in classical Greek literature.

The one caveat that I would warn people with is…

The Companion Bible Appendices

…that Thayer is a unitarian, i.e. he believes in some form of modalism, i.e. that either God uses 3 persons like hats, manifestations would better describe it. The person of God moving between the three hats of Father, Son, or Spirit. But actually, he just out-right denies that Jesus is God. Look up his definition of Jesus and Christ, and you will see where he says “erroneously claimed to be God”. Read more on wikipedia.org about Thayer

In February 1891 Thayer published a lecture in which he expressed disagreement with the position of Biblical inerrancy, asserting that his own acceptance of various errors of history and science in the Bible did not materially detract from his belief in the overall soundness of Christianity. Wikipedia.org

These links are to download NT (or LXX) Bibles in Greek, or literal English translations from original Greek. I do not recommend anything here not because these Bibles do or do not have value in Bible Study, but in that in recommending anything, I will start discussions and arguments into the user's view of these works as poor or better one than another. If you can read Greek and therefore you are here, you should have your opinions formed or are in researching it for yourself. Buyer beware is all I can say. Everything here is free by the way.
