Bible typology is the systematic classification of Bible terms, concepts, and people that have common characteristics or traits. This is an earthly situation or concept that reflects a heavenly or spiritual “antitype”. The type being the representation in the allegory, and the antitype being the original spiritual meaning. A Dictionary of Bible Types examines over 1,000 types, shadows, signs, symbols, pictures, figures, and patterns in the Bible with topics ranging from “Aaron” to “Yoke.” (See warning below)

Warning for any Bible Types work

The identification and “decoding” of biblical allegories and types is very difficult. Mostly we are sure about these where the Bible itself does this decoding, and otherwise, be very, very careful about dogmatically declaring some explanation to be the absolute definite declaration on the issue. While it is possible to gain insight on Scripture by examining Types, you should not build doctrine solely on types.

Excerpt of “Babylon” from Wilson’s Dictionary of Bible Types

Jeremiah 50:14 (b) Throughout chapters 50,51of this book, the actual city of Babylon is directly in view, but what is said about that city indicates clearly that it refers to the great religions and idolatries of the world which seek to depose GOD and enthrone their own philosophies. This is particularly true of Jeremiah 51:6 and Jeremiah 51:8 which evidently refer to the same situation that we find in the New Testament.

Revelation 17:5 (b) This is plainly a type of the great false religious systems of the world, particularly Romanism, which knew nothing of the grace of GOD, nor the Blood of Christ, nor the personal ministry of the Holy Spirit. It refers to those religious sects and heresies which deny the faith of our fathers, and reject the truth of GOD. Babylon is represented as a woman.

Revelation 18:2 (b) As in the above Scripture we see the religious side of false religions So in this verse we find the political aspect of those great apostate religions, the political-religious world. Under this description, we see the wickedness of the merchants, the politics of the church, and the filthiness of her society which are all to be brought under the judgment of GOD. We should note that in Revelation 18:13, the last two items of merchandise of this great apostate religious group consists of slaves (bodies and souls of men). This is particularly true of the Romish church, whose members are slaves in body, soul, and spirit to their religious leaders. This Babylon is described as a city in Revelation 18:16.
